The South African Council for Scientific & Industrial Research isolated the main ingredient present in hoodia which is now known as P57 mainly responsible for the appetite suppressant effect, also they have patented Hoodia Gordonii and granted UK-based Phytopharm a license, and they collaborated with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to research further and isolate active ingredients from the extracts and look into synthesizing them for use as an appetite suppressant.
