Previously Southern Africa countries are not much concerned about protecting hoodia Gordonii propagation. But as and when the Council for Scientific & Industrial Research identified the molecule responsible for appetite suppressing abilities of hoodia Gordonii they issue license with rights for further development to Phytopharm and made an agreement with the San communities who traditionally used the hoodia Gordonii plant for several medicinal purposes and also assisted the CSIR in identifying the original species. Now the governments are concerned about hoodia Gordonii and its trade, which may infringe on this agreement and also the patent rights.
Hoodia Gordonii propagation in the wild desert mainly assisted by the wind when hoodia seeds are carried away from the mother plants. The collection of hoodia Gordonii plants and their seeds may interfere with this process. The cultivation of such useful species may be beneficial to the whole mankind.
Hoodia gordonii propagation (natural reproduction of the species) or cultivation is difficult & a very slow process.
