Researchers of Council for Scientific & Industrial Research of South Africa isolated the ingredient from Hoodia - P57 which is mainly responsible for appetite suppressant effect and after getting the patent of P57 issued the license to a famous pharmaceutical company, Phytopharm, who gives the further development and marketing rights to the renowned biotech company, Pfizer.
Scientists had organized animal trials for Hoodia on rats since this is a kind of species that can eat anything and they find that rats have stopped eating completely after these trials. A synthetic Hoodia drug from Phytopharm will not be available for several more years due to clinical trials. Many consumers feel the appetite suppressant started resulting within 20 minutes of ingestion, it is felt that the general population responds to Hoodia within one or two weeks of starting the program. Some very obese people say that although they felt the appetite suppressant kicking in after 2 – 3 weeks, it took a few weeks before they realized their interest in food was significantly decreasing, thereby helping to change life long eating habits.
